European toll structures are typically tiered by vehicle weight, axle count, and emission class (EURO standard). Two fundamentally different billing models exist: distance-based tolling, which charges per kilometre driven, and time-based vignettes, which grant network access for a fixed period. For cross-border freight, toll costs are a calculable line item in rate-setting and can steer routing decisions. Not to be confused with port dues or airport charges, which apply to other transport infrastructure.
