A tanker (tank vessel) is a seagoing ship that carries liquid cargo in built-in tanks – mainly crude oil, oil products such as diesel or jet fuel, chemicals and liquefied gases (LNG and LPG carriers). By size, the industry distinguishes among others Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax tankers and VLCCs. Tankers mostly operate in tramp shipping and are employed on charter rather than in liner services. For the wider logistics sector they matter indirectly: when tankers are missing on a route or have to take detours, freight rates and fuel prices rise – and with them bunker and fuel surcharges for container, air and road transport.
