Definition & Explanation
Seaworthy packaging is a container or wrapping system engineered to endure the specific stresses of ocean transport: saltwater exposure, persistent humidity, temperature fluctuations, stacking loads, and constant vessel movement. Its purpose is to deliver cargo undamaged and uncontaminated, regardless of voyage length or sea conditions. Shippers are required to use seaworthy packaging when the bill of lading stipulates it, or when trade terms such as CIF place a duty of care on the seller. Reinforced wooden crates, moisture-barrier films, desiccants, and corrosion-inhibiting coatings are standard solutions—far more robust than typical road or air freight packaging. Practically speaking, inadequate seaworthy packaging is one of the most common grounds on which cargo insurers deny claims.
