Rerouting is the reactive adjustment of a shipment's planned transport path in response to an unplanned obstacle – road closures, border congestion, accidents, infrastructure works, or natural events. The carrier or forwarder identifies an alternative route operationally to minimise delay and maintain service continuity. Any additional time or cost generated is allocated according to the transport contract. Large-scale maritime rerouting – for instance around a blocked chokepoint or a naval blockade area – can also trigger supplements such as the war risk surcharge. Rerouting should be distinguished from deliberate route optimisation, which is a proactive choice made before or during transit to reduce costs or improve efficiency, and from diversion, where the delivery destination itself is changed.
