Rail energy consumption refers to the amount of energy used by rail transport to move trains (passenger and/or freight) over a given distance or tonnage. It is typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per route, per vehicle, or per ton-kilometer and is used to assess efficiency and compare propulsion technologies, operating practices, and infrastructure. Influencing factors include train mass, speed, track grade, traction and braking systems, and scheduling.
