The authority releases a limited number of daily slots, split between the Panamax and Neopanamax locks, across staggered booking periods: Period 1 opens up to 365 days before the transit date, with further periods roughly 21 and 10 days out. Only a confirmed reservation guarantees a specific transit day; vessels without a slot operate on a first-come basis and can face waiting times of several days when capacity is tight. The reservation carries its own booking fee, charged on top of the regular canal toll.
