In the transport chain, notification is triggered at defined milestones – vessel arrival, customs hold, or confirmed delay. The carrier, freight forwarder, or logistics provider then contacts the notify party named on the bill of lading: typically the consignee or another authorized third party. Communication channels include email, automated track-and-trace portals, or, in some trades, written notice. Timely notification is often a contractual obligation, not just a service courtesy; failure to notify can affect customs clearance deadlines, demurrage liability, and the validity of cargo claims.
