During a vessel's voyage, several navigational safety technologies work in concert: radar detects obstacles and other ships in low-visibility conditions; the Automatic Identification System (AIS) continuously broadcasts position and voyage data to coastal authorities and nearby vessels; the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) renders up-to-date depth contours and traffic separation schemes; and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) secures emergency communications.
