National port electrification strategies are government frameworks that define how and by when port infrastructure is to transition from fossil-fuel-based systems to electric power sources. A central element is typically shore-side power (also called cold ironing): vessels draw electricity from the port grid while berthed instead of running their own diesel generators, significantly reducing noise and air pollution in port areas. Beyond this, such strategies cover the electrification of cargo handling equipment (cranes, straddle carriers) and landside vehicles, as well as on-site renewable energy generation. Shipping lines, port authorities, and logistics operators all face investment requirements – from vessel electrical systems to charging infrastructure and revised operating procedures. In the European Union, the FuelEU Maritime regulation provides additional regulatory impetus for the sector.
