When heavy cargo is handled at port terminals, warehouses, or industrial sites, lifting eye anchor points come into play at the moment the rigging crew attaches the first shackle. These are reinforced steel lugs or loops – welded or bolted directly to the load – engineered to accept rigging hardware such as shackles, chains, or synthetic slings. Each anchor point must be structurally calculated to carry the forces applied during the lift. Placement matters as much as rated capacity: incorrectly positioned lifting eyes cause the load to list, making controlled movement impossible and significantly raising accident risk. For heavy-lift shipments, freight forwarders and shippers typically define anchor point layouts during the packaging and transport planning phase. Lifting eye anchor points are distinct from lashing points, which secure cargo to the carrier but are not rated for vertical loads.
