A LASH vessel (Lighter Aboard Ship) is a specialized sea carrier designed to load, transport, and discharge pre-loaded inland barges – known as lighters – using a heavy-lift gantry crane fitted on board. The lighters are loaded at the inland origin, hoisted aboard the mothership for the ocean leg, then set afloat at the destination port and towed onward by tugboat, bypassing conventional port cargo-handling entirely. This approach dramatically cut port turnaround times and eliminated traditional breakbulk stowage costs, as destination ports required minimal handling infrastructure. LASH ships gained traction from the 1960s onward, primarily on routes linking North American and European inland waterway networks with deep-sea ports. Containerization has since largely supplanted them, though a residual role remains in trades where port infrastructure constrains container operations.
