Unlike arbitrary serial numbers, ISO freight container identification codes follow a binding international standard: ISO 6346 assigns each container a permanent, unique alphanumeric identifier made up of a four-letter owner code and seven digits – an equipment category identifier, a six-digit serial number, and a mathematically derived check digit.
