ISO Freight Container Identification Codes

Unlike arbitrary serial numbers, ISO freight container identification codes follow a binding international standard: ISO 6346 assigns each container a permanent, unique alphanumeric identifier made up of a four-letter owner code and seven digits – an equipment category identifier, a six-digit serial number, and a mathematically derived check digit. This 11-character code enables automatic optical reading at port gates and crane installations, end-to-end tracking across carrier and customs systems, and unambiguous liability assignment in the event of damage or dispute. The owner codes are registered and administered by the Bureau International des Containers (BIC), which maintains the ISO 6346 registry – the BIC code is not a separate system but part of the same standard. Without this level of standardization, the digitally integrated container supply chains of today could not function.
