A shipment departs the supplier's facility and arrives damaged or not at all – inbound freight insurance covers exactly these scenarios. The policy protects the receiving company against financial loss caused by damage to or loss of goods in transit between supplier and warehouse. Coverage can be arranged by either the shipper or the consignee, depending on applicable Incoterms or contractual terms. Unlike outbound cargo insurance, this cover targets the procurement side of the supply chain: raw materials, components, and semi-finished goods sourced from third parties. Companies with significant inbound volumes should verify whether existing open-cover policies extend fully to supplier shipments.
