Before a commercial driver can legally haul hazardous materials – chemicals, explosives, radioactive substances, or compressed gases – a HazMat Endorsement must be added to their Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The endorsement is issued following a written knowledge test and, where required, a security threat assessment conducted at federal level. It authorizes the holder to transport federally regulated dangerous goods on public roads within the United States. Validity is time-limited and renewal is mandatory; specific requirements may vary by state and cargo type.
