Definition & Explanation
Free days, also called free time, are the period during which an importer may leave a container at the terminal, or keep it off-site, free of charge after discharge, before storage fees, demurrage or detention begin to accrue. Carriers and terminal operators set the number of free days individually and may extend them on request during operational disruptions such as port congestion or strikes. How many free days apply in a given case, and whether they are extended, must be clarified in writing with the carrier and terminal.
