Definition & Explanation
A shipping report states that spot rates on the transpacific route are rising per FEU – the price for a standard 40-foot container. FEU (Forty-foot Equivalent Unit) is the internationally used measurement for the capacity of a 40-foot container and serves in container shipping as the reference unit for freight rates, market statistics, and capacity planning. One FEU equals exactly two TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), the base unit derived from the 20-foot container. Carriers, charterers, and market analysts such as Xeneta or the Drewry World Container Index typically quote spot rates per FEU, since the 40-foot container is the most common standard container in world trade. Not to be confused with TEU, which is mainly used for vessel capacity and port throughput statistics.
