Coverage is written on either all-risk or named-perils terms, typically extending to physical damage, theft, breakage and moisture. Specialist cargo insurers, Lloyd's syndicates and export credit agencies provide these programs; premiums reflect cargo value, trade lane, packaging standard and country of destination. The critical practical point: carrier liability under international conventions—whether maritime law, the Montreal Convention for air freight or the CMR for road transport—is capped on a per-unit or per-kilogram basis and routinely falls well short of actual commercial value. A separate cargo policy is therefore the standard risk management tool for professional exporters, not an optional extra. It should not be confused with a freight forwarder's liability insurance, which covers only the forwarder's own negligence.
