Export freight damage insurance programs are cargo policy structures designed to protect exporters against loss or physical damage to goods in transit from origin to destination. Coverage is written on either all-risk or named-perils terms, typically extending to physical damage, theft, breakage and moisture. Specialist cargo insurers, Lloyd's syndicates and export credit agencies provide these programs; premiums reflect cargo value, trade lane, packaging standard and country of destination. The critical practical point: carrier liability under international conventions—whether maritime law, the Montreal Convention for air freight or the CMR for road transport—is capped on a per-unit or per-kilogram basis and routinely falls well short of actual commercial value. A separate cargo policy is therefore the standard risk management tool for professional exporters, not an optional extra. It should not be confused with a freight forwarder's liability insurance, which covers only the forwarder's own negligence.
