Maritime Emission Control Areas (ECAs) are designated sea areas where stricter limits for sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter apply under MARPOL Annex VI. “ECA compliance” refers to vessels’ adherence to these regulations, for example by using low-sulfur fuel, installing exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), or adopting alternative propulsion technologies.
