Carriers and freight forwarders execute a diversion – the deliberate change of a shipment's destination or port of call mid-voyage – when a port is congested, a weather event threatens schedule integrity, or a consignee requests a last-minute destination change. Unlike rerouting, which preserves the original destination but alters the path to reach it, a diversion changes the endpoint itself. In maritime transport, diversions must be recorded in the bill of lading or shipping instructions and typically generate additional charges for fuel, port fees, and administrative handling. Container lines routinely include a liberty-of-deviation clause in their bill of lading terms, granting them the contractual right to divert without breaching the contract of carriage – a provision shippers should factor into their risk and insurance planning.
