Deep-sea shipping refers to intercontinental liner services operated with large container vessels, for example between Asia and Europe or across the Atlantic and Pacific. It differs from short-sea and feeder shipping in vessel size, range and the number of ports called: for cost reasons, deep-sea services call only at a few hub ports offering sufficient water depth, quay length and handling capacity. A port qualifies as a deep-sea port when it can handle these large vessels directly rather than receiving cargo by feeder from a hub. For forwarders the difference is tangible: a direct deep-sea call removes one transhipment step, saving time and reducing delay risk, but it requires an adequate hinterland network.
