Definition & Explanation

Freight forwarders and logistics providers deploy RFID chips, NFC tags, and related electronic identification carriers to track shipments, containers, and transport assets automatically across the supply chain – eliminating manual scanning at every transhipment point. As a unit passes a reader, the chip transmits identification and status data to the transport management system, delivering real-time visibility of location, dwell time, and – where sensors are integrated – temperature or shock events. Compared with barcode scanning, the method is faster, less error-prone, and enables simultaneous capture of multiple units in a single read cycle. In customs contexts, chip tracking logistics can automate advance declarations and reduce clearance times; in cold chain operations, it enables early detection of temperature deviations and proactive intervention before cargo loss occurs.
