It covers the period from chassis pickup to return and is billed independently of freight or container charges, because chassis are often managed by dedicated pool operators rather than ocean carriers. Daily or weekly rates are standard; after a short free-use period, incremental overage charges apply. The fee is most prominent in North American intermodal transport, where chassis have historically been unbundled from container rates.
