The cargo manifest gives customs authorities and port operators a single, consolidated view of everything aboard a vessel, aircraft, or truck – without it, orderly cargo clearance is not possible. It lists each consignment's description, quantity, weight, packaging type, consignee, and destination. In maritime trade, the manifest must be submitted to the destination port authority before arrival as part of the pre-arrival declaration requirement. It differs from the stowage plan, which maps the physical placement of containers on board, and from the bill of lading, which governs the contractual relationship between shipper and carrier for an individual shipment.
