An automated security check is a technical screening process that combines scanning, imaging, and data analytics to examine shipments, vehicles, or persons at border crossings and transport facilities for security risks, without manual first-pass inspection of each item. Technologies deployed include X-ray and CT systems, explosive and chemical trace detectors, and licence plate readers; results are cross-referenced in real time against risk profiles and watchlists. At airports, seaports, and road crossings, the method significantly reduces inspection times while maintaining or improving detection rates for security-relevant goods. Unlike manual inspection – which relies on sampling and is labour-intensive – automated security checks provide comprehensive coverage and generate a complete audit trail. It should not be confused with electronic data interchange (EDI), which transmits declaration data but does not replace physical screening.
