Hirtshals vive soprattutto di traghetti e di pesca, più che di traffico container. Dalla punta settentrionale dello Jutland, Color Line e Fjord Line collegano i porti norvegesi di Kristiansand, Stavanger e Bergen, mentre la Smyril Line raggiunge le isole Fær Øer e l'Islanda, facendone uno dei principali porti traghetto della Danimarca. Realizzato come porto artificiale tra il 1919 e il 1931, è anche uno degli scali pescherecci più importanti del Paese. Le merci viaggiano in prevalenza come carichi RoRo, accompagnati o meno, a bordo dei traghetti; non vi opera alcuna linea container. Per spedizioni containerizzate tradizionali le alternative sono Aarhus o Aalborg, con l'entroterra servito dall'autostrada E39 e dalla ferrovia.
