Depuis l'ouverture du canal de dérivation en 1973, l'infrastructure navigable contourne la ville de Welland par l'est, tandis que l'ancien tracé urbain est devenu le Welland Recreational Waterway réservé à la plaisance. Le canal Welland proprement dit voit transiter environ 3 000 navires et quelque 40 millions de tonnes par an entre le lac Érié et le lac Ontario, mais la ville n'y charge ni ne décharge pratiquement aucune marchandise et ne dispose d'aucun terminal à conteneurs ou de marchandises diverses. Pour les transitaires, Welland est un point de passage plus qu'une escale. La manutention réelle du corridor s'effectue aux postes céréaliers et vraquiers de Port Colborne et à Port Weller, le port de Hamilton couvrant les volumes outre-mer.
