Stora Enso a longtemps fait de Veitsiluoto, près de Kemi sur le golfe de Botnie, l'un des grands sites papetiers de Finlande, avant d'y arrêter définitivement la production de papier en 2021. L'usine produisait alors environ 790 000 tonnes de papier par an. La scierie voisine poursuit son activité au sein de la division produits bois du groupe, de sorte que le port traite désormais surtout du bois scié et des produits forestiers plutôt que de gros volumes de papier. Longtemps géré par Kemi Shipping, le port est progressivement intégré au port voisin de Kemi. La route et le rail relient le site à l'arrière-pays du nord de la Finlande. Pour le conteneur et les lignes régulières, le port en eau profonde d'Ajos, à Kemi, constitue l'alternative naturelle, avec Oulu.
