Une baie en fer à cheval, au nord de l'île de Skye, abrite le terminal d'Uig, d'où les ferries de Caledonian MacBrayne traversent le Minch vers les Hébrides extérieures. Les liaisons desservent Tarbert (Harris) et Lochmaddy (North Uist) et embarquent passagers, véhicules et fret en roll-on/roll-off. Pour l'approvisionnement des îles, cette desserte est essentielle : denrées, matériaux de construction et marchandises diverses voyagent surtout en remorques roulantes.
