Au mouillage de Scapa Flow, deux navires bord à bord transfèrent du brut ou du GPL : la scène résume la vocation énergétique de ce plan d'eau abrité des Orcades. Depuis 1977, le terminal de l'île de Flotta reçoit pétrole brut et GPL de la mer du Nord par un oléoduc de 210 kilomètres. Scapa Bay, à un mille au sud de Kirkwall, abrite le centre de contrôle qui surveille le trafic sur cette rade de près de 125 milles carrés, libre de houle et de courants. C'est ici qu'a eu lieu, en 2007, le premier transfert de GNL de navire à navire au monde. Sept jetées et neuf postes accueillent de petits navires de marchandises générales et de vrac, tandis que le quai de Scapa Bay, profond d'environ 1,8 mètre, reste modeste. Le trafic conteneurisé et douanier des Orcades passe par Kirkwall et Hatston.
