BHP, Fortescue, Roy Hill et Rio Tinto expédient leur minerai de fer par Port Hedland, dans le Pilbara, qui s'impose comme le premier port d'exportation de vrac au monde en tonnage. Le site a traité environ 561 millions de tonnes en 2021/22, presque exclusivement du minerai de fer, sur ses 19 postes à quai. Ce port fluvial soumis aux marées fait sortir les vraquiers Capesize et VLOC chargés par convois, à marée haute, dans un chenal étroit. Outre le minerai, de plus faibles volumes de sel et de manganèse y sont exportés, tandis que le trafic de conteneurs ou de marchandises diverses y est quasi inexistant. La desserte terrestre repose sur les voies ferrées minières dédiées et les trains routiers, et non sur un réseau ferré public. Pour des conteneurs ou du conventionnel à destination de l'Australie-Occidentale, Fremantle, près de Perth, est le port approprié.
