Construction navale et bois ont longtemps fait vivre Pictou, sur la rive nord du port de Pictou, dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent. Sa pertinence pour le fret est aujourd'hui limitée : la fermeture de l'usine de pâte Northern Pulp à Abercrombie en 2020 a supprimé son principal apport de marchandises, et les faibles profondeurs d'environ 6,4 m au chenal comme au quai restreignent les grands navires. La réparation navale, avec une petite cale sèche, demeure active, si bien que le site sert surtout à l'entretien, à la pêche et au tourisme. Pour un trafic conteneurisé ou de marchandises diverses en Nouvelle-Écosse, Halifax et les postes en eau profonde de Point Tupper et Mulgrave constituent les solutions pratiques.
