Au fond de la baie Georgienne, sur le lac Huron en Ontario, Owen Sound occupe un mouillage naturel réputé parmi les plus sûrs des Grands Lacs. Le trafic y est essentiellement vraquier : céréales, sel de voirie et ciment en poudre, ce dernier souvent acheminé par barge. Le silo à grains de Parrish & Heimbecker, d'une capacité d'environ 93 000 t, constitue l'installation phare, desservie par des quais d'environ 6,4 m de tirant d'eau. Reliée au réseau par la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent, la place dessert l'arrière-pays par la route et le rail vers le sud de l'Ontario. Aucun service conteneurisé ou de ligne international n'y opère. Pour ces besoins, Hamilton ou Toronto s'imposent, tandis que Goderich reste la référence régionale pour le sel.
