Trois à quatre mètres de tirant d'eau au quai et une seule vocation industrielle : Norrsundet, à environ 25 km au nord de Gävle sur le golfe de Botnie, fut longtemps le port de l'usine de pâte à papier de Stora Enso. La fermeture de l'usine (annoncée en 2007, effective en 2008) lui a retiré sa charge industrielle ; il figure encore dans la zone de pilotage de Gävle mais ne traite plus que des produits forestiers ou des colis lourds occasionnels. Pour le conteneur, le dédouanement ou les marchandises diverses régulières, Gävle constitue l'alternative crédible, reliée à l'arrière-pays par le rail et la route.
