Géant du charbon, nain du conteneur : tel est Newcastle, en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud (UN/LOCODE AU NTL). Avec environ 149,9 millions de tonnes de charbon exportées en 2024, et 149,1 millions de tonnes quasi stables en 2025, c'est le premier port charbonnier du monde. Le tonnage provient surtout de la Hunter Valley et gagne les terminaux par un réseau ferroviaire dédié reliant les mines aux chargeurs de navires. Le chargement s'effectue sur trois terminaux : Carrington et Kooragang, exploités par Port Waratah Coal Services, et le terminal NCIG de Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, soit une capacité cumulée d'environ 211 millions de tonnes par an.
