Au service des champs pétroliers de la mer du Nord, Invergordon s'est imposé comme l'un des grands centres offshore et vraquiers du nord de l'Écosse, sur la rade abritée du Cromarty Firth. Ses eaux profondes (jusqu'à 14 m) permettent la réparation, l'inspection et la conversion de semi-submersibles, de plateformes de forage et de navires de production flottants. Le port exporte céréales et pétrole brut, importe farine de poisson, charbon, engrais et tubes, et traite également produits forestiers et fret de projet en colis lourds. Avec l'ensemble du Cromarty Firth, il manutentionne environ 2,86 millions de tonnes par an et reste le premier port de croisière d'Écosse en été. Aucune ligne conteneurisée n'y opère : pour les conteneurs, Grangemouth et Aberdeen sont les options pratiques. La desserte terrestre s'appuie sur la route A9 et la voie ferrée vers Inverness.
