Des postes à quai capables d'accueillir des navires de 443 m et d'un tirant d'eau d'environ 23 m font de Hunterston, sur le Firth of Clyde, l'un des sites les plus profonds du Royaume-Uni. Construit en 1976 par British Steel comme terminal minéralier, il a longtemps déchargé minerai de fer et charbon, jusqu'à environ 5,5 millions de tonnes par an, dont du charbon pour la centrale de Longannet. Le terminal a fermé en 2016 après l'arrêt de cette centrale, et ses installations ont été démantelées à partir de 2019. Exploité par Clydeport (Peel Ports), le site n'est plus un port de fret régulier : il sert aujourd'hui au levage lourd, à l'éolien offshore et au démantèlement de structures pétrolières et gazières. Le trafic conteneurs n'y est pas confirmé ; les conteneurs de la Clyde transitent par le terminal de Greenock. Pour le vrac sec et les colis lourds, la profondeur exceptionnelle reste l'atout majeur de Hunterston.
