Installé sur le delta de la rivière Ota, le long de la mer intérieure de Seto, Hiroshima est le premier port de la région du Chugoku. Il traite chaque année environ 12 millions de tonnes et quelque 210 000 EVP. Son terminal international à conteneurs d'Ujina aligne un quai de 330 mètres à 14 mètres de tirant d'eau, trois portiques, une capacité d'environ 8 000 EVP et 76 prises reefer pour les marchandises sous température dirigée. Les importations portent surtout sur le GNL, le bois, le blé et l'orge, tandis que les automobiles, dont la production locale, dominent les exportations. Le transbordement vers d'autres ports japonais et vers la Corée constitue un segment en croissance. Pour un transitaire, Hiroshima convient aux flux conteneurs, reefer et breakbulk de l'ouest du Japon ; Kobe et Osaka restent les escales majeures les plus proches pour les lignes mondiales.
