Baptisé Harimizu jusqu'en 1959, Hirara est depuis longtemps le seul véritable port de l'île de Miyako, dans l'archipel des Ryukyu. Caboteurs et porte-conteneurs en provenance de Naha et du Japon continental y débarquent vivres, matériaux de construction et biens de consommation pour les quelque 55 000 habitants, tandis qu'un ferry relie l'île voisine de Tarama. Le port accueille également des navires de croisière sur la mer de Chine orientale. Aucune ligne internationale régulière n'y fait escale et la desserte terrestre se limite au réseau routier insulaire. Pour le trafic conteneurisé interrégional, Naha demeure la plaque tournante, Ishigaki desservant les îles Yaeyama.
