Exploité par BHP Mitsubishi Alliance et par Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure, Hay Point se consacre exclusivement à l'exportation de charbon métallurgique destiné à la sidérurgie. Le site, à environ 38 kilomètres au sud de Mackay dans le Queensland, réunit le terminal Hay Point (près de 55 Mtpa) et le terminal voisin de Dalrymple Bay, l'une des plus grandes installations de charbon à coke au monde. Le charbon arrive par rail depuis les mines du bassin de Bowen et est chargé par convoyeurs sur de longs appontements en rade ouverte. L'ensemble traite environ 130 à 140 millions de tonnes par an, sans aucun poste pour conteneurs, marchandises diverses ou dédouanement mixte. Pour un transitaire, Hay Point reste un point d'exportation de vrac sec, et non une escale pour caisses ou colis de projet. Les conteneurs passent par Brisbane, tandis que Gladstone couvre les autres besoins en vrac et colis lourds.
