Loin des grands terminaux à conteneurs de l'île, Galle est le plus ancien port naturel du Sri Lanka, sur la côte sud-ouest, aujourd'hui tourné vers la pêche, la plaisance et la croisière. Son quai principal n'offre qu'environ 8 à 9 m de profondeur : les gros cargos n'y accostent pas et la manutention se limite à un fret général modeste, le poisson et les produits de la mer constituant l'exportation dominante. Galle est par ailleurs le seul port du pays doté d'une marina pour la navigation de plaisance et sert de base à la marine sri-lankaise dans le Sud. Pour le conteneur ou des envois plus volumineux, sa pertinence reste faible : le port en eau profonde de Colombo et celui de Hambantota, au sud, sont les solutions adaptées. La gestion du port relève de la Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
