Sous le code PT FAO se cache un petit port commercial de l'Algarve, tourné vers l'exportation de matériaux et de produits agricoles. Installé sur la lagune de Ria Formosa et géré par l'autorité APS (Sines et Algarve), il traite environ 532 000 tonnes par an pour quelque 200 escales. Le ciment de l'usine Cimpor, près de Loulé, en est la principale exportation, vers l'Algérie et le Cap-Vert, avec aussi pierres, fer et carreaux vers Gibraltar, caroube régionale vers l'Angleterre et sel. Faute de ligne conteneurs régulière, les conteneurs et les gros tonnages transitent par Sines ou Lisbonne. Pour le vrac régional et le fret de projet en Algarve, Faro reste néanmoins une solution adaptée.
