Charbon, vrac sec et produits liquides : voilà ce qui transite par Ensted, et non des conteneurs. Aménagé dès 1959 comme port charbonnier de la centrale voisine d'Enstedværket – dimensionné pour environ 6 millions de tonnes de charbon par an –, le terminal a vu la centrale fermer en 2013 puis être démolie en 2019. Avec près de 18 m d'eau, Ensted compte parmi les ports les plus profonds du Danemark et de la Baltique. Depuis 2021, il appartient au port d'Aabenraa, qui exploite le quai d'environ 500 m pour le vrac, tandis qu'Inter Terminals y gère des réservoirs de produits liquides ; une usine Power-to-X d'hydrogène est par ailleurs prévue. Pour le vrac et la marchandise diverse sur la côte est danoise, le port d'Aabenraa et Fredericia constituent des solutions complémentaires.
