À environ 80 kilomètres au nord de Doha, dans le golfe Persique, le terminal d'Al Shaheen dessert le plus grand champ pétrolier offshore du Qatar. Exploité par la North Oil Company, coentreprise de QatarEnergy (70 %) et TotalEnergies (30 %), le champ compte 33 plateformes et plus de 300 puits et représente près de 45 % de la production pétrolière nationale, soit quelque 100 millions de barils par an. Le brut est stocké sur deux des plus grands FSO à double coque au monde, FSO Africa et FSO Asia, puis exporté vers les pétroliers via des points d'amarrage à bouée unique. Il s'agit donc d'un pur terminal d'exportation de brut offshore, sans manutention de conteneurs, de RoRo, de conventionnel ni de dédouanement. Pour le fret commercial à destination du Qatar, le port de Hamad, au sud de Doha, traite les conteneurs et le fret général, tandis que Ras Laffan gère le GNL et les produits énergétiques. Le terminal lui-même n'a aucune fonction dans le transit classique.
