State enterprise Türkiye Taşkömürü Kurumu (TTK) runs Zonguldak, the export outlet of Turkey's principal hard-coal basin on the Black Sea coast. Lying about 330 km east of Istanbul, the port is geared mainly to bulk coal, loaded at a roughly 510 m coal pier served by electric cranes. Bulk carriers of up to some 30,000 dwt call here, though a shallow channel depth of about 4.9 m caps vessel size and draught. Around 200 ships arrive each year against a handling capacity near 2 million tonnes. Breakbulk plus seasonal ferry and Ro-Ro services round out the traffic, while regular container operations are not confirmed. The Irmak–Zonguldak railway links the quays to central Anatolia. Shippers needing container slots or larger parcels should look to the new deep-water Port of Filyos or to Ereğli (Erdemir).
