Unlike the deep-sea giants at the Yangtze mouth, Zhenjiang is an inland river port, ranking among the three largest in the Yangtze basin where the river meets the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal in Jiangsu. It offers berths for vessels up to 70,000 DWT and a channel depth around 11 metres that keeps ships of about 50,000 DWT calling year-round, handling roughly 64 million tonnes and 239,000 TEU annually. The Dagang, Jianbi, Jurong and Longmen terminals cover dry and liquid bulk, containers and breakbulk. Typical imports are timber, coal and steel scrap, while exports centre on cotton, grain, cereals and cement clinker. For forwarders, Zhenjiang works well as a pre- or on-carriage point for inland shipments along the Yangtze, backed by solid rail and road links. For large container volumes and ocean calls, the estuary ports of Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan, plus nearby Nanjing, remain the stronger choices.
