More than 50 million tonnes of crude a year are processed at Zhenhai, home to Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical (ZRCC), China's largest refinery and one of the world's biggest integrated refining and petrochemical sites. The terminals here work liquid bulk – crude oil, refined products, LPG and petrochemical feedstocks such as ethylene, benzene and polypropylene – served by the area's largest liquid-chemical dock rather than container quays. Set within the Ningbo petrochemical base on the East China Sea, the site is tied to its hinterland by pipelines, road and rail across the Yangtze region. The "very small river port" tag carried in older registers no longer reflects its true role as a major liquid-bulk and petrochemical gateway. For containerised cargo, forwarders use the adjacent Ningbo-Zhoushan terminals at Beilun and Meishan, among the largest container ports worldwide.
