A 400,000-tonne bulk berth, twin 300,000-tonne crude oil jetties, a 250,000-tonne iron ore terminal and a 150,000-tonne coal terminal define Zhanjiang as one of southern China's heavyweight bulk gateways. Sitting on the South China Sea at the southern tip of Guangdong, the deepwater port moves well over 300 million tonnes a year, dominated by coal, petroleum, iron ore, grain, chemicals and general cargo. Container handling runs through two 150,000-tonne box berths but stays regional at roughly 240,000 TEU (2021), so Zhanjiang is best read as an energy and raw-materials port rather than a liner container hub. Rail and road corridors carry cargo deep into southwest China, giving inland shippers in Guangxi and Yunnan a southern coastal outlet. Breakbulk, project and reefer flows are feasible, but high-volume FCL shipments clear faster through Shenzhen or Guangzhou. For bulk, tanker and heavy-lift cargo into western Guangdong it offers purpose-built facilities; for mainline container services, Yantian/Shekou and Nansha are the practical alternatives.
