Around 1.2 million tonnes pass through Zarzis each year, with sea-salt exports making up close to 80 percent and refined-petroleum imports supplying southern Tunisia. Sitting at the country's south-eastern edge near the Libyan border, the port stays firmly in the bulk business – salt, hydrocarbons, olive oil and general cargo rather than mainstream containers. Its quays take vessels up to 185 metres and 10.5 metres draft, backed by a dedicated petroleum jetty and breakbulk berths. A first containerised link to Radès, Italy and Libya has started, but Zarzis remains a bulk and project-cargo port rather than a container terminal. An adjoining free-zone on more than 240 hectares of port land aims to draw additional industrial and transhipment traffic. For regular container volumes, shippers turn to Radès near Tunis, and to Gabès or Sfax for phosphate and chemical bulks.
