Canned sardines are Zamboanga's signature export: the surrounding peninsula lands roughly 46% of the Philippines' sardine catch, shipped on to the United States, Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. As the main port of the Zamboanga Peninsula, it is also the key maritime link between Mindanao, the Sulu Archipelago and Borneo. Its container throughput of about 77,500 TEU is entirely domestic, while two RoRo ramps and a finger pier with a RoRo platform move more than 129,000 units a year. General merchandise, agricultural products and fishery goods round out the cargo mix. Road and coastal shipping tie the port to the peninsula's interior. For international container services or larger overseas volumes, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and the hubs of Cebu and Manila are the practical alternatives.
