Set in the Zaan region just north of Amsterdam, Zaandam is an industrial and agri-bulk port serving the Dutch food industry rather than a container gateway. The area hosts the world's second-largest cocoa grinding cluster after Côte d'Ivoire, with processing plants run by Cargill and Olam. Cargoes accordingly centre on cocoa beans, edible oils, sugar and other agricultural bulk feeding local manufacturers. As part of the Port of Amsterdam (the Zaanstad area), it reaches the sea via the North Sea Canal and the IJmuiden locks, while inland barges, rail and road connect it to the European hinterland. Customs handling is integrated with the wider Amsterdam port. For mainstream container traffic, the main Amsterdam complex and Rotterdam are the right choices.
